HMSHost Netherlands switches to electrically powered delivery vehicles as of 2023

Amsterdam, 3 FEBRUARY 2023 – HMSHost International, global market leader in the hospitality industry for people on the move, will use electrically powered delivery trucks for the supply at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol from January 2023. This is in line with Schiphol’s sustainability strategy and ambition to be an emission free airport by 2030.

HMSHost International Senior Vice President Commercial Bastiaan van Asten: "Only by working together we can achieve changes in the market. By acting as a collective, we can succeed in implementing a cultural change. As part of Autogrill Group, we have a global strategy: 'Make It Happen'. With small actions we build on a better future together. For example, from January 2023, we will only use Bidfood’s electrically powered trucks for our supply at Schiphol. This is a big step to reduce our footprint and improve the sustainability that is needed worldwide. This strategic decision was made together with our business partner Royal Schiphol Group so that we can achieve our joint goal of being climate neutral by 2030."

Electric vehicles for 15,000kg less CO2 emissions

Bidfood is by far the largest distributor of HMSHost Netherlands and supplies almost all the ingredients needed for the restaurants in the terminals. On an average day, Bidfood delivers seven full trucks with various ingredients, from fresh fruit and vegetables to the tastiest sandwiches, to the restaurants of HMSHost Nederland at Schiphol. To deliver these products to HMSHost at Schiphol, Bidfood's trucks drive around 20,000 kilometers per year. By replacing this significant amount of transport miles with electric trucks, this will reduce HMSHost's CO2 footprint by 15,000kg of CO2 emissions per year. In the coming months HMSHost Netherlands expects to have more news, which further helps to achieve the ambition to have more than 80% of all products delivered by CO2-neutral vehicles before the end of 2023.

Sustainability as a foundation for the cooperation

One of the nine focus areas of HMSHost's ESG Roadmap is 'Make It Happen', is to reduce emissions and accelerate the energy transition. Reducing the CO2 emissions of HMSHost Netherlands is an important goal for the company and part of the global strategy. This ambition is also central to the collaboration between HMSHost Nederland and Royal Schiphol Group. The use of electric vehicles from Bidfood contributes to achieve these sustainability goals and is a big step for the company and for the cooperation between Schiphol and HMSHost.
